　　《字花》117期「漫畫變」

　　117期專題「漫畫變」，重點在於文學與漫畫是可以互相進入、互相改變對方的兩種語言。因此我們把整期分成兩段，方向正好相反。

　　上半段是「讓文學走進漫畫」。我們找來視覺創作者，直接拿已經存在的文學作品交給他們，請他們用漫畫的方式重新演繹。重點不在於「忠不忠於原著」，而在於觀察：當一段純文字的故事被放進格子、被線條切割、被翻頁節奏牽引之後，它會失去什麼，又會多出什麼。同時，我們在兩篇文學漫畫中間放了一組詩，這組詩的靈感來自另一部經典漫畫，目的是讓詩成為圖文之間的第三種聲音，看看詩能不能在漫畫的空白處長出新的呼吸。

　　下半段則是「讓漫畫走進文學」。我們請三位寫作者用散文回望自己與漫畫的私人歷史。他們不是在做書評或排行榜，而是在說：漫畫曾經在什麼時候、用什麼方式，比小說更快、更深地碰觸到他們的記憶、創傷和自我認知。透過這三篇極私人的文字，我們想呈現的是：漫畫並不只是娛樂或次級敘事，它同樣可以承載最沉重的生命經驗，而且往往用比純文字更直接的方式做到。

　　整期做下來，我們只想問一個問題：當文字與圖像不再各自守在自己的領域，而是真正交換位置、互相改寫的時候，我們習慣的閱讀方式、敘事方式，甚至我們對「故事」的定義，會不會也跟著改變？這場實驗沒有標準答案，我們只想把過程攤開來，讓讀者自己去感受「變」的發生。

●Rex Koo〈象的消失〉 村上春樹那頭神秘大象，被Rex Koo拖進黑白格子，廚房、冰箱、鎮長、市民，全變成線條與陰影。文字裏的荒誕，在漫畫裏變得安靜又殘酷，像一場無聲的消失儀式。

●郭爾君〈漫「話」：通往世界的格子〉 漫畫的格子不是牢籠，而是記憶的縫隙。作者把被遺忘的碎片塞進格子，讓它們重新拼湊成一個人。每一格，都是通往另一個世界的門。

“How To” of Community Work offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to build and sustain community in Singapore. Based on over a year of interviews, research, writing, and design, this book gathers the insights of 38 individuals—community workers, social workers, grassroot leaders, social entrepreneurs, citizen facilitators, policy makers, and academics—each shaping how we connect, collaborate and mobilise care.

From navigating complex relationships to working alongside individuals from low-income or marginalised backgrounds, this book doesn't shy away from the everyday challenges of community work. With real-life Challenge Scenarios, reflective Thinker Exercises, and a hands-on Guide, it captures the lived realities and quiet wisdom of those doing the work on the ground.

“How To” of Community Work is both a heartfelt passion project and a practical resource. Supported in part by the Good Design Research grant from the DesignSingapore Council, it documents the know-how that rarely gets written down—but is vital for anyone seeking to do community work meaningfully.

Cosmopolitan Singapore—emblematic of globalised capitalism—usually calls to mind a number of clichés: orderly, clean and green, a shopping and business paradise, and a model of sound economic management. Tourists, journalists and passing businessmen cast an absent-minded glance at the local society, noting that the food is excellent, e-communication works well and armoured tanks are absent on street corners. But after 17 years living here, the author shows a different side of Singapore: looking at her from the grassroots. Beyond his personal atypical story, he draws with light strokes of the brush, a picture of a warm and generous people, much less passive than one is often given to think. He also describes the difficulties faced by civil society, and tracks the rapid social evolution in the city-state as it is confronted with major challenges: a nose-diving demography, cramped territory with an infrastructure which cannot be extended indefinitely, and massive immigration which is increasingly resented by the local population. Most of all, Fr. Arotcarena places on record the work and significance of the Geylang Catholic Centre, which makes this priest in Geylang himself a legend.

The author, TEO SOH LUNG was imprisoned without trial under Singapore’s notorious Internal Security Act between 1987 and 1990. In solitary confinement for more than two years, she drew inspiration from little living creatures that lived in or visited her cell. Lizards, spiders, ants, crickets, beetles, toads, and grasshoppers were all welcomed to her cell and closely observed! They were her inspiration. Sharing food and lodging with them, she drew numerous drawings and composed rhymes and songs about them. She was particularly fond of one long‐time resident, a lizard. As much as she was observing it, she was aware that it too was observing her!

Of the 62 original poems in English, 22 had also been translated into Chinese by Lim Pai.

In the 1980s, Singapore’s first opposition member of parliament since 1966 was elected. A group of political observers sensing this “shift in the wind”, decided to lay bare the ideological threads that linked the PAP’s policy choices, governance approach, and by extension, the current social structures formed by the ruling government. The result was a book providing an overview of the local socio-political landscape. Written almost 40 years ago when a historical shift in Singapore’s democracy seemed imminent, the same hope echoes today as we see the opposition gaining more seats in Parliament after the recent 2020 General Election. The critiques of the government’s authoritarian tendencies and elitist meritocracism are even more relevant today, after more than 58 years of nation building under one party.

To most outsiders, Singapore is a much sought-after place to live in. But beneath the surface calm and orderliness, there is a slew of rules and laws to keep the people hushed and quiescent.

Disobedience to any law even if it is patently unreasonable, is not tolerated. And the full weight of the­­ state is brought to bear on the fearless who dare to speak their minds. They thus tread the thin line between exercising their rights and breaking the law.

Survivors of Operation Spectrum — the alleged Marxist conspiracy — speak up in this volume. For many of them, this is the first time that they cast their minds back to 1987 and try to make sense of the incident. What they did in that period was meaningful and totally legitimate. Their families and friends share the same view.

The detainees were subjected to ill-treatment, humiliation, and manipulated television appearances. Under duress, and threatened with indefinite imprisonment without trial, they had to make statutory declarations against their will.

It is hoped that with this publication, Singaporeans will know what actually happened and decide for themselves if there was a national security threat that necessitated the mounting of Operation Spectrum.

This is a bilingual collection (in Malay and English) of poems by Said Zahari when he was incarcerated under the Internal Security Act in Singapore from 1963 to 1979. Some of the original poems were written in Malay and some in English.

Said made observations on prison life, commented on the social-political events of the day and on his unjust 17-year imprisonment without trial. His poems tell of a life lived in unwavering service and commitment to his beliefs and struggle for a new society based on true independence and compassion for all.

The 72 heart-felt poems leave us a picture of the personal sacrifices which many had made in Singapore’s anti-colonial struggle. They put a face to those whose narratives had been scrubbed out by political chicanery. This book is a legacy for Singaporeans to treasure.
