Dey◎Shivram Gopinath
平常價 $24.00“Dey” is Tamil slang. A polysemic portal into community. It is “hey”, “no”, “yes”; it hails, it invites, it warns, it cajoles, it pleads, it loves. Just like Shivram Gopinath’s Dey: a cross-genre, multi- tongued celebration of diasporic desire, complaint and joy that stretches what poetry can be. Part translation, part illustration, part verse, Dey is a love child of Tamil cinema tropes and themes, Singaporean hopes and dreams. A discordant soundtrack to migrant identity, an invitation to a language game, a retort to power. Rajinikanth, Lee Kuan Yew, durian fish soup fight for your eyeballs. A thick syrupy mix, that’s what. Dey, read it.
DIPLOMACY: THE SINGAPORE EXPERIENCE (2ND EDITION)◎S Jayakumar
平常價 $38.00In this updated book, viewed by many as a definitive guide to Singapore-style diplomacy, former minister, diplomat and law dean S Jayakumar outlines the principles and norms that form the bedrock of Singapore’s foreign policy, shaped by more than five decades of hard-earned experience of ministers and officials. Professor Jayakumar, who retired from politics as Senior Minister in 2011, illustrates these with his accounts of and reflections on milestones where he had been involved as either Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs or, much earlier, as Singapore’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN).
This second edition includes an overview and chapter updates of the tumultuous trends and developments in the 2010s that have made a significant impact on geopolitics and diplomacy, especially for small states such as Singapore.
The book documents how Singapore has been able to create diplomatic and economic space for itself through proactive and creative diplomacy, for instance, by initiating key international forums, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Forum and Asia-Europe Meeting, and by pursuing free trade agreements, such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership and the European Union-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, both inked in 2018. Singapore has remained relevant to the international community by hosting international summits, such as the Trump-Kim Summit in 2018 and the Xi-Ma Summit in 2015, and by leading UN efforts such as the Singapore Convention on Mediation, opened for signature in Singapore in 2019.
Professor Jayakumar recounts how Singapore has responded to moves by other countries that are inimical to its national interests and put it under intense pressure, without losing its credibility. These include three difficult cases between 1994 and 1995 — the hanging of Dutch national Johannes Van Damme, that of Filipino maid Flor Contemplacion, and the caning of American Michael Fay — and the impounding of Singapore’s Terrex infantry carrier vehicles in transit in Hong Kong in 2016.
Professor Jayakumar also discusses how Singapore has resolved disputes with other countries in an amicable manner through third-party settlement, in compliance with international law and international agreements, which has become an important feature of Singapore’s foreign policy. These include the land reclamation case with Malaysia and the case where the International Court of Justice awarded sovereignty over Pedra Branca to Singapore.
COMMENDATIONS
“The honest , meaty narratives offer insights into strategic goals and diplomatic means of one of the world’s most skillful foreign ministries.”
Review from Foreign Affairs
“S Jayakumar’s reflections explain how Singapore manages to “punch above its weight” on the international stage. In doing so, it offers valuable insights for historians, political scientists and leaders from around the world.
Kofi A Annan, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, 1997–2006
Doing Good Better: Choices and Paradigms in the Social Ecosystem◎Willie Cheng
平常價 $39.00How can the social ecosystem transform in the new normal? If a charity is in dire need of cash, should it accept a donation that might be tainted? What happens when we place a value on all things in our marketised society? Can the corporate beast be harnessed without reconstituting corporations? Should charities be allowed to run businesses?
Willie Cheng provides his perspectives to these questions and more in his new book, a collection of essays on issues including the social ecosystem in Singapore, market values in society, the role and future of nonprofit organisations, corporate responsibility, “new capitalism”, volunteerism and values.
His analyses and logic are supported by research, case studies and examples gleaned from his many years of experience in both the social and business sectors.
Written in an easy, friendly and readable style, this book provides valuable insights for volunteers, executives and leaders in nonprofits and corporates who want to know how they can succeed in doing good better in the new world order.
With a foreword by Professor Tommy Koh, Professor of Law, National University of Singapore, and Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Don't You Like Me Vol.01◎Lv Tian Yi
平常價 $25.00High schooler Lin Feiran has a very antagonistic relationship with his dormmate, Gu Kaifeng… That is, until Lin Feiran suddenly develops the ability to see ghosts. Since Gu Kaifeng’s high level of yang energy keeps spirits at bay, Lin Feiran finds himself forced to stick to his once-nemesis like glue. Gu Kaifeng quickly becomes smitten, so Lin Feiran must keep up the relationship charade if he wants to keep his ghost repellent around.
Don't You Like Me Vol.02◎Lv Tian Yi
平常價 $25.00Lin Feiran never asked to see ghosts—but thanks to a pair of yin-yang eyes he unknowingly inherited from his grandfather, he can’t stop seeing them. The ability brings him more frights than thrills, like the horrifying discovery that his dorm room isn’t home to just two people, but eighteen. And the sixteen extra “roommates”? Let’s just say they like to party… every night.
There’s only one way to get a break from the constant hauntings: physical contact with Gu Kaifeng, his annoyingly perfect roommate and the person Lin has (perhaps unfairly) labeled his archnemesis. The closer the contact, the longer the ghost-free relief lasts, much to Lin’s dismay.
Still, clinging to Gu is better than being scared out of his mind. And to Lin’s growing confusion, Gu doesn’t seem to mind the clinginess—in fact, he’s surprisingly accommodating. He lets Lin sleep in his bed, shares his desk, and… even tags along to the toilet.
Lin is desperate to find another solution—any solution—that doesn’t involve sticking to Gu like a human security blanket for the rest of his life. But why does Gu seem so pleased with the current arrangement?

A shopping mall self-destructs, and a single mother vanishes. A tree house for orphans and old folks is torn apart by an act of mercy. The Singapore Flyer is reinvented as a political prison. In this collection of nine tales, Clara Chow examines an alternative Singaporean landscape—one that exists only on paper—and the people we might be in it. A hybrid of journalism and fiction, Dream Storeys documents the voices of urban visionaries, while taking their ideas into inventive, evocative new territories.

Drowning Sorrows of Raging Fire Vol. 1◎Priest
平常價 $25.00Manifesting fire. Seeing through walls. Stopping time. Abilities like these separate metahumans from ordinary people. Some metahumans serve as secret protectors, while others use their power for cheap gains. Some only wish to live quietly. And some seek to upend the world.
3,000 years ago, the world looked very different, populated by beings from mythology’s pages. But when the yao of old brought humanity to the brink of annihilation, Emperor Wu was forced to seal away the source of spiritual power, gifting the world to those without abilities. Now, someone is plotting to break that seal in a bid to reclaim what once was.
When easy-going fire user Xuan Ji takes a job at the Anomaly Regulation Bureau to escape his mounting debt, he’s forced into a confrontation with the ancient demon Sheng Lingyuan. Enigmatic, aloof, and deeply broken, Sheng Lingyuan seems to have a connection with the seal—and with Xuan Ji himself. Together with a team of quirky metahumans, they must uncover both present-day conspiracies and sorrows from millennia past—and perhaps stop trying to kill each other.
Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire is a haunting urban fantasy with biting humour, exploring the lines people draw between each other—and the ones they’ll cross to be together.
Drowning Sorrows of Raging Fire Vol. 2◎Priest
平常價 $25.00Three thousand years ago, Sheng Lingyuan leapt into the Crimson Abyss and used his life to seal away the evil yao race. He reawakens in the modern era and makes the acquaintance of Xuan Ji, the director of a government agency that manages supernatural disaster relief. They must work together to unravel a conspiracy that threatens to doom humanity.
Drowning Sorrows of Raging Fire Vol. 3◎Priest
平常價 $25.00As the scales of fate tip further into chaos, the bond between Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan is tested by the weight of three millennia. The mysteries of the past are no longer just whispers; they are a roar that threatens the stability of the modern world. With the Deviant Control Office stretched to its limit, the duo must delve deeper into the origins of their connection and the sacrifices made in the fires of the Great War.
In this third volume, the stakes reach a fever pitch. Trust is a luxury they can barely afford as ancient enemies emerge from the shadows. Every revelation brings them closer to a truth that could either bridge the gap between their souls or consume them both in a final, devastating blaze.

Dying To Meet You◎Angjolie Mei
平常價 $30.00Funeral director and life celebrant Angjolie Mei, one of the very few women in the male-dominated industry, shares her stories and experiences in dealing with the dead—or rather, as she would put it, "People who have completed their life journeys." Be prepared to see funerals and death in a very different light. In this second edition, two new chapters have been added: one relating to the COVID-19 global pandemic and how it has affected funerals—and the industry as a whole; and another on Showers of Love, a sanctuary where family members can join in the process of preparing their loved ones for their final journeys. Find out about the inspiration behind this concept, and how it has provided families and visitors to grieve, and heal.
***
Why would someone leave a shining career in management to work among the dead?
Angjolie Mei, funeral director and "life celebrant", recounts how the death of her father—a veteran known as ‘The Coffin King’ in the funeral industry—prompted this dramatic choice.
What exactly happens during embalming? What kind of post-death restoration is needed for second-degree burn victims? What are the little-known facts surrounding suicide in Singapore?
Angjolie offers the insider’s view on these and other aspects of an industry usually shrouded in mystery, and reflects on how her perceptions of death, and life, have changed since she chose this extraordinary profession.
Eating Chilli Crab in the Anthropocene◎Matthew Schneider-Mayerson
平常價 $26.00In this era of climate crisis, in which our very futures are at stake, sustainability is a global imperative. Yet we tend to associate sustainability, nature, and the environment with distant places, science, and policy. The truth is that everything is environmental, from transportation to taxes, work to love, cities to cuisine.
This book is the first to examine contemporary Singapore from an ecocultural lens, looking at the ways that Singaporean life and culture is deeply entangled with the nonhuman lives that flourish all around us. The authors represent a new generation of cultural critics and environmental thinkers, who will inherit the future we are creating today. From chilli crab to Tiger Beer, Changi Airport to Pulau Semakau, O-levels to orang minyak films, these essays offer fresh perspectives on familiar subjects, prompting us to recognise the incredible urgency of climate change and the need to transform our ways of thinking, acting, learning, living, and governing so as to maintain a stable planet and a decent future.

Everyday Modernism: Architecture and Society in Singapore ◎Jiat-Hwee Chang and Justin Zhuang
平常價 $65.00Everyday Modernism is the first comprehensive documentation of Singapore’s modern built environment. Through a lens of social and architectural histories, the book uncovers the many untold stories of the Southeast Asian city-state’s modernization, from the rise of heroic skyscrapers, such as the Pearl Bank Apartments, to the spread of utilitarian typologies like the multi-storey car park. It investigates how modernism, through both form and function, radically transformed Singapore and made its inhabitants into modern citizens. The most intensive period of such change happened in the 1960s and 1970s under the rise of a developmental state seeking to safeguard its new-found independence. However, the book also looks both earlier and later, from between the 1930s to the 1980s, to cover a wider range of histories, building types and also architectural styles, expanding from the International Style and Brutalism and into Art Deco and even a touch of Postmodernism.
The book’s 33 essays are richly illustrated with some 200 archival images and drawings as well as more than 90 contemporary photos by architectural photographer Darren Soh. It covers the beginnings of Singapore's modern landscape, including its first condominium, columbarium, flatted factory, and pedestrian overhead bridge, amongst others. But the book is also interested in endings, investigating how modern buildings have changed over time, and been adapted for new uses or even threatened with redevelopment today. By examining the evolution of the once exceptional into the typical and by learning how abstract spaces become lived places, the book traces how modernism has become part of everyday life in Singapore.
