Priest In Geylang: The Untold Story of the Geylang Catholic Centre◎Fr. Guillaume Arotçarena
平常價 $25.00Cosmopolitan Singapore—emblematic of globalised capitalism—usually calls to mind a number of clichés: orderly, clean and green, a shopping and business paradise, and a model of sound economic management. Tourists, journalists and passing businessmen cast an absent-minded glance at the local society, noting that the food is excellent, e-communication works well and armoured tanks are absent on street corners. But after 17 years living here, the author shows a different side of Singapore: looking at her from the grassroots. Beyond his personal atypical story, he draws with light strokes of the brush, a picture of a warm and generous people, much less passive than one is often given to think. He also describes the difficulties faced by civil society, and tracks the rapid social evolution in the city-state as it is confronted with major challenges: a nose-diving demography, cramped territory with an infrastructure which cannot be extended indefinitely, and massive immigration which is increasingly resented by the local population. Most of all, Fr. Arotcarena places on record the work and significance of the Geylang Catholic Centre, which makes this priest in Geylang himself a legend.
Creatures Big and Small◎Teo Soh Lung
平常價 $15.00The author, TEO SOH LUNG was imprisoned without trial under Singapore’s notorious Internal Security Act between 1987 and 1990. In solitary confinement for more than two years, she drew inspiration from little living creatures that lived in or visited her cell. Lizards, spiders, ants, crickets, beetles, toads, and grasshoppers were all welcomed to her cell and closely observed! They were her inspiration. Sharing food and lodging with them, she drew numerous drawings and composed rhymes and songs about them. She was particularly fond of one long‐time resident, a lizard. As much as she was observing it, she was aware that it too was observing her!
Of the 62 original poems in English, 22 had also been translated into Chinese by Lim Pai.
A Shift in The Wind◎Editors: Chew Keng Chuan, Tan Tee Seng, Teo Soh Lung, Kenneth Tsang
平常價 $15.00In the 1980s, Singapore’s first opposition member of parliament since 1966 was elected. A group of political observers sensing this “shift in the wind”, decided to lay bare the ideological threads that linked the PAP’s policy choices, governance approach, and by extension, the current social structures formed by the ruling government. The result was a book providing an overview of the local socio-political landscape. Written almost 40 years ago when a historical shift in Singapore’s democracy seemed imminent, the same hope echoes today as we see the opposition gaining more seats in Parliament after the recent 2020 General Election. The critiques of the government’s authoritarian tendencies and elitist meritocracism are even more relevant today, after more than 58 years of nation building under one party.
Ridiculous: Untold Tales of Singapore◎Edited by: Teo Soh Lung & Low Yit Leng
30.00To most outsiders, Singapore is a much sought-after place to live in. But beneath the surface calm and orderliness, there is a slew of rules and laws to keep the people hushed and quiescent.
Disobedience to any law even if it is patently unreasonable, is not tolerated. And the full weight of the state is brought to bear on the fearless who dare to speak their minds. They thus tread the thin line between exercising their rights and breaking the law.
1987: Singapore's Marxist Conspiracy 30 Years On◎Edited by: Chng Suan Tze & Teo Soh Lung
平常價 $30.00Survivors of Operation Spectrum — the alleged Marxist conspiracy — speak up in this volume. For many of them, this is the first time that they cast their minds back to 1987 and try to make sense of the incident. What they did in that period was meaningful and totally legitimate. Their families and friends share the same view.
The detainees were subjected to ill-treatment, humiliation, and manipulated television appearances. Under duress, and threatened with indefinite imprisonment without trial, they had to make statutory declarations against their will.
It is hoped that with this publication, Singaporeans will know what actually happened and decide for themselves if there was a national security threat that necessitated the mounting of Operation Spectrum.
Poems from Prison/Puisi Dari Penjara◎Said Zahari
平常價 $25.00This is a bilingual collection (in Malay and English) of poems by Said Zahari when he was incarcerated under the Internal Security Act in Singapore from 1963 to 1979. Some of the original poems were written in Malay and some in English.
Said made observations on prison life, commented on the social-political events of the day and on his unjust 17-year imprisonment without trial. His poems tell of a life lived in unwavering service and commitment to his beliefs and struggle for a new society based on true independence and compassion for all.
The 72 heart-felt poems leave us a picture of the personal sacrifices which many had made in Singapore’s anti-colonial struggle. They put a face to those whose narratives had been scrubbed out by political chicanery. This book is a legacy for Singaporeans to treasure.
Living in a Time of Deception◎Poh Soo Kai
平常價 $35.00This is the historical memoir of Dr Poh Soo Kai, a medical doctor and a founder member of the People's Action Party. Here he tells the story of his incarceration as a political prisoner under Singapore's notorious Internal Security Act, and the anti-colonial struggle which defined the years after the Second World War.
Poh was born in Singapore in 1930. He is the maternal grandson of prominent businessman Tan Kah Kee. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, he continued his studies at Raffles Institution and entered the University of Malaya in 1950. He was a founding member of the Socialist Club in 1953 and became its second President from August that year till the following year. Poh was one of the eight members of the Fajar editorial board charged with sedition in 1954. He graduated three years later with a degree in Medicine. Poh became acquainted with Lee Kuan Yew, who was the legal advisor for the students during the Fajar Trials, during his time in university. He subsequently became a founding member of the PAP in 1954. When the party split in 1961, he left to join the Barisan Sosialis as its Assistant Secretary-General. He was arrested and detained without trial under the Preservation of Public Security Ordinance during Operation Coldstore in 1963. He was arrested again without trial under the Internal Security Act in 1976 and 1982.
Beyond The Blue Gate: Recollections of a Political Prisoner◎Teo Soh Lung
35.00This is a moving and detailed account of the author's tribulations while under detention without trial.
Singapore lawyer Teo Soh Lung has written this careful account of her experiences and feelings when detained in Whitley Detention Centre 21 from May 1987 to 6 September 1987, and from April 1988 to 1 June 1990. Accused of involvement in the alleged "Marxist Conspiracy", Soh Lung discusses many legal aspects of the case, including Singapore's banning of London QC Anthony Lester and her various Appeal attempts. She tells of the regime and her physical and emotional suffering, as well as the strategies and beliefs which enabled her to retain her integrity and balance in circumstances intended to subdue her. Relevant official documents are appended.
Apple in China: The Capture of the World’s Greatest Company◎派翠克·麥奇(Patrick McGee)(譯者:鍾玉玨)

平常價 $28.00August 2025 – The Little Singapore Book has been a bestseller since its first release in 2015, and was the first children’s book that traced all 700 years of Singapore’s history. Since then, it has sold over 18,000 copies. Now, on its 10th anniversary, Pepper Dog Press has published the Chinese edition of this modern Singapore children’s classic! To be released early September 2025, 小小新加坡故事书 is presented in simplified Chinese script, and fully supported with hanyu pinyin, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Just like the English original, 小小新加坡故事书 is a fun-filled romp through Singapore’s
history, packed in four chapters. It starts with a simplified history of Singapore from the 14th century through nation building and to the present day, then on to a whirlwind tour of the historical districts of Singapore. Flitting from past to present, it reveals the fascinating origins of neighbourhoods such as Chinatown and Little India, and how they have changed. For instance, did you know that Serangoon was once cattle farmland? Or that there was actually a race course in Race Course Road? The final chapter touches on contemporary culture and life in Singapore, from the colourful language that we call ‘Singlish’ to local food.
Activities, quizzes, and sidebars of fun facts are sprinkled within to pique children’s interest.
All content and illustrations have been rigorously researched and is sprinkled with engaging details that encourage exploration and conversation between young readers and grown-ups. First published with the support of the SG50 Grant, The Little Singapore Book is a firm favourite among children, and a choice pick among teachers and parents. In 2022, The LittleSingapore Book was named in the prestigious IFLA World Through Picture Books, an annotated list of recommended picture books compiled and endorsed by librarians from around the world. Criteria for making this list include being able to “stand the test of time” and demonstrating excellence in publishing. In 2024, illustrator Chloe Chang won the inaugural Illustrator of the Year in 2024 for her illustrations in The Little Singapore Book.
Now, the Chinese edition brings this rich content to Chinese readers in softcover version, and an expanded 96 pages, translated by Chen Shuang and edited by award winning translator Chua Sok Koon. This is also Pepper Dog Press’s first Chinese language publication.

All I know is I've admired shadow brokers for as long as I can remember.
Was it a certain anime? Or was it a manga - or a movie?
Eh, I guess it doesn't matter. I was all in for anything that featured a mastermind, or an eminence in shadow, as I like to call them. These characters were never the protagonists or final bosses but were relegated to a role behind the scenes where they flaunted their powers and meddled in the affairs of others. I've always looked up to the men in the shadows.
I wanted to be one of them.
